"Leather Travel Writing Case Late 17th-early 18th Century"
Beautiful red leather travel writing case from the late 17th - early 18th century. Made of wood covered in gold-plated red leather with double fillets and plant decoration. Domed lid fitted with an iron carrying handle. Closing hooks on the front missing, lid grip ring with a beautiful engraved brass plate, keyhole but missing key. Interior with five compartments: a main one with keyhole (missing lock and key) pink silk interior. one with a pull ring for storing the feathers, pink silk interior. A smaller side with the same pull ring, pink silk interior. One with the original brass powder compact. The last one is square in shape for the inkwell, which has now disappeared. The lid has a nicely decorated flap like the lid held by two original brass hooks, open it serves as a writing desk. The original pink silk interior made it possible to store letters held by cotton laces, now worn and incomplete. A diamond-shaped paper label on which is written in ink: gilibert priest 1847. Hypothesis: Perhaps this writing desk belonged to the missionary priest (1818-1891) in the 19th century? Left Aubrac for New Caledonia where he kept a diary, an important testimony of rare density kept for more than 25 years. Numerous wear to the leather, ink stains, gaps etc., look carefully at the photos. Note: A very nice collector's item despite its flaws.
