"Kota Janus Reliquary Figure, Gabon."
Very few Kota reliquary figures are double-sided, qualifying them as Janus: MBULU-VITI. Our old copy measures 44cm which can reasonably be dated to the beginning of the 20th century. Wooden core clad in copper or brass with eyes held on both sides by screws from 19th century trade rifles. The patina of use and time is quite remarkable and not artificial or mystified by some often very crude subterfuges. It is worth noting the quality of the stapling of the copper pieces on the very dry wood of the sculpture. The jamb is incomplete with more or less old accidents with repairs of various skill. The metal manufacturing base is recent. It should be noted that this object has no particular provenance identified.
