Still life
Oil on canvas, cm 82 x 67
With frame cm 92 x 78
The composition of this floral still life is very well articulated: in fact, next to the usual botanical theme appears in the center, as if in a medal, the effigy of a Roman emperor. Profile portrait, following the typical practice of the Roman medal, surrounds the laurel wreath on the head, emblem of the imperial royalty. The characteristic features of the nose and chin show a portrayal intention devoid of any ideality. What might seem like a vase turns out to be a kind of raised, with three masks on the support and a shell at the top. These details express the meticulous rendering of the visual data by the painter. The same flowers, almost climbing around the central structure, highlight the analysis of the botanical reality: the petals, leaves and stems, plastically defined, are lit up with different chromatic gradations in the numerous painted species. If you look carefully at the composition, the details will be so well defined that you can even see a few drops of water. Everything looks so absolutely natural, as well as the exotic parrot, which is on the left, that seems to stare at the viewer, inviting him to observe the painting.
The particular stylistic rendering, the colours used, the articulated composition, including the central medallion, the floral waterfalls and the parrot allow to refer this work to the hand of a French painter working in the first half of the eighteenth century. The artist had to be informed of the pictorial production of Jean-Baptiste Oudry (1686-1755), whose two still lifes in the Versailles Museum depicting flowers, animals and busts are mentioned here by analogy (see Farè, La vie silencieuse en France, la nature morte au XVIII siècle, p.111, 1976).
