Castel Sant'Angelo
Oil on canvas, cm 49 x 58.5
With frame, cm 63,5 x 75

The analysed painting depicts a pleasant view of the city of Rome. Taken from the bank of the Tiber, Castel Sant'Angelo is represented in the foreground, while in the distance you can see the domes of Saint Peter’s Basilica. Castel Sant'Angelo or Mole Adrianorum, also called Mausoleo di Adriano, was started by the emperor Hadrian in 125 as his funeral mausoleum, and completed by Antonino Pio in 139. In front of the building is the pons Aelius, current bridge Sant'Angelo, which with its arches reflects in the waters of the Tiber, generating pleasant games of color.
The painting is part of the genre of views in vogue during the Grand Tour, made as a reminder of the famous monuments visited to bring into their homes. Italy was the preferred destination for travellers, artists and intellectuals; Rome, Florence and Naples were the essential destinations for the completion of the education of young European aristocrats as well as for the many artists attracted by the echo of classical antiquities and the charm of archaeological remains. The painting in analysis combines the serene daily life of the two fishermen, almost indifferent to the surrounding landscape, the precision of the drawing rich in details, such as the statue of the Archangel Michael on top of the building or the boats moored. The artist has been able to reproduce the luministic effects of the waters of the Tiber, giving a vivid image of Rome with a bright and clear color range.
