"Festival On The Tiber In Rome, Engraving By Pierre Jacques Duret After Joseph Vernet"
Pierre Jacques Duret, a student of Lebas, illustrated travel guides and specialized in landscape and marine engravings, particularly after Vernet. Engraved after the painting in the Villette collection: "Joutes sur le Tibre", it dates from 1766. We can read on the lower margin: "Fête sur le Tibre à Rome/ J.Vernet pinxit- PJDuret sculpsit/ dedicated to his majesty Christian VII king of Denmark and Norway/by his very humble and very respectful servant PJDuret/From the Cabinet of Monsieur le Marquis de Villette/In Paris at Duret engraver in the middle of the rue du Fouare" To the right of the engraving, Claude Joseph and Virginia Vernet are walking, an elegant character introduces them to another who salutes them with his hat down; Behind them, a governess holds back little Livio, 3 years old, who is trying to play with his dog. Our engraving is a late 18th century print on laid paper, the inking is a little weak, just to the right of the coat of arms a tear in the margin which reaches the bottom of the image.
