Antique Gilt Wood Italian Frame 1600s

 
Antique gilded frame carved in lime wood with horizontal development with volutes of broad foliage; the depth of the pronounced volutes is typical of cartocci, ornamental motifs depicting leaves with rolled, curled tips. This 17th-century Lombard Baroque frame is actually a frieze as it was created without a rebate, the present one has been restored and was probably originally placed as the window frame of a reliquary. The gilding is water-based with a red bole preparation and is in a good state of preservation apart from minor faults.

Carved by hand in a rectangular shape horizontally, the frame is formed by deep volutes and deep foliate decorations, the flat parts around the opening have a fine burinwork, star-shaped incisions. The interior is centred by a shaped mirror. In good condition apart from minor repairs at the upper curls. Two small curls have been reworked, as shown in the gallery photo on the back, and the tip of a scroll is missing on the right middle part. repairs compatible with the 17th century date, comes from a private collection.
