"Fang Sculpture, Gabon"
Large Fang reliquary effigy sculpture from southern Cameroon or northern Gabon. The object measures 59 cms excluding the base, being a statue made of medium density hardwood. The quality of the work of the sculpture is quite remarkable, a Byeri statue of an impressive presence with particularly successful work on the head, a prognathous mouth and glass eyes (influence of neighboring Kongo ethnic groups), and a headdress at the back of the skull with a central crest. The ears are not shown. The very aesthetic shiny patina is deep with scarifications on the body. This is an unpublished object without pedigree and of unknown dating, offered for its quite remarkable aesthetic quality. It should be noted that there was a regluing at the level of the left leg without any missing parts. The metal base is of recent manufacture.
