Antique Baluchi Rug, 95 X 158 Cm, Hand-knotted Wool In Afghanistan In The Mid-20th Century

Baluchi rug with gull decoration, tribal decoration present on Afghan rugs. In wool on fine hand-knotted wool, natural colors, from the middle of the 20th century, around 1950-1960. In very good condition, this model nevertheless shows very slight signs of wear. These rugs (Baluch - Beloutches - Balouchi) are knotted and woven by the semi-nomadic and nomadic Baluchi tribes, in Iran, Afghanistan, Russia and Central Asia. Knotted in sheep's wool but also especially with unbleached camel wool, horsehair is also often found. These rugs can be dark and dull, red, wine-colored, earthy, but also very light, camel-colored. Our model presents Gulls, commonly called orange-colored elephant feet, curry and white are also there to enhance the brown color of the rug. The decoration is geometric, taking patterns from the decorations of the Caucasus but also from ancient Persia. The ethnic patterns are the tarantula, in the center of the gulls, the kotchaks, rams' horns and many very stylized flowers. The most sought-after Baluchis are the animal ones and the prayers presenting a niche, the mihrab, rectangular specific to this tribe, (the niche, indicates the Quibla, the direction of the Kaaba in Mecca). ## Today, we are led to think that the Beluch or Baluch carpets are originally from Baluchistan. This is not at all the case, they are knotted further north, in Khorasan, in Iran, on the Russo-Iranian border, they are also given, for the most beautiful models the name of Mecched, capital of Khorasan. These are nomadic carpets, so the sizes are quite small, the warps and wefts until recently were always in wool (before 1940), but the use of cotton has supplanted wool, the knot used remains the Persian knot. The large number of patterns used shows the Persian influence, and the geometric characters link them to the family of Central Asian carpets, which is not at all the case. The interior decoration often reveals a very great geometric elaboration, in all the symbolism and symmetry. The design is very elaborate, modern, it has a certain magic in the shapes and colors. The sumptuous border of the most beautiful effect, in the style of Afghan and Central Asian carpets; Béchir, with seven wide bands and eight thin bands present Greek and friezes resembling the Caucasian and Central Asian borders Proof that the art of the carpet is an immense melting pot, mixture of very many influences coming from all parts of the East.
