Rare late 18th-century carved mother-of-pearl portrait plaque, c. 1790s
This exceptional carved mother-of-pearl portrait plaque dates to the late 18th century, circa 1790s. It features the remarkably detailed profile of a distinguished gentleman with a receding hairline, rendered in delicate low relief with superb precision. The sitter’s refined features and classical drapery are characteristic of the Neoclassical portraiture style that flourished at the end of the 18th century.
The mother-of-pearl plaque is mounted against a silvered metal ground, decorated with an intricate engine-turned guilloché pattern that enhances the luminous effect of the carving. It is set within a rectangular ebonised wood frame, fitted with an oval gilt brass mount and a leather-covered back.
Portraits of this kind, carved from mother-of-pearl, are rare survivals and demonstrate extraordinary craftsmanship, requiring exceptional delicacy and control. The harmonious combination of shimmering mother-of-pearl, finely engraved silvered metal, and gilt brass reflects the refined decorative sensibilities of the late 18th century. Such plaques were often set into snuff boxes or étuis and are now considered important relics of the Neoclassical and early Regency aesthetic.
This piece would appeal to collectors of Neoclassical decorative arts, portrait miniatures, and connoisseurs seeking a rare and sophisticated accent for period or eclectic interiors.
