Object description :

"Important Athenian Woman Carrying 3 Oil Lamps, Object Of The Grand Tour 1800"
Description:
Chiseled bronze, gilded, red and black Golzinne marble.
This astonishing and rare object from the Grand Tour reproduces an Athenian foot carrying 3 oil lamps. At the time, oil lamps were moved around homes, hung according to the need for light, and a foot was used to fix them high up in the middle of a room, this set: support and lamps is reproduced in this work from the Grand Tour.
A large base in black and blood-red marble supports the lamp foot.
Moreover, the Restoration candelabra with a chain attached to a peg on the shaft decoratively reproduce the principle of flying oil lamps placed on their three-foot support.
The base is on three lion's paws, three fluted uprights support a gadrooned basin, between these uprights we discover a very archaic statue of Hermes on a complex base. The upper circular tray with an umbilicus is surrounded by three deer massacres and bears three storks holding moving snakes in their beaks. These snakes are the gallows of three oil lamps.
Each one is different in shape with a lid in the form of a statue of Hermes, a rat, a swan. The objects of the Grand Tour or the Tour du Chevalier reproduced the successive significant archaeological discoveries and allowed the "Knights" to thus bring back the Antique spirit of their humanities. Antique beauty or its specificity took precedence over authenticity, thus François 1st wanting to reproduce the statue of the Laocoon group belonging to Leo X.
In this case this archaic and ornamented light fixture in a varied and loaded way, one will think of the antique bronze furniture of the Bardo Museum in Tunis, where there are for example bronze divans decorated with horses' heads in protomes.
