Antique Figurine Of A Woman And A Cherub By Sitzendorf, Circa 1890.

Elegant and classic antique porcelain figurine of a barefoot young woman and a cherub holding flowers and smelling them. She is wearing period clothing, a light open blouse and a beautiful skirt decorated with flowers. The cherub is covered with a blue coat. The figurine is painted in polychromy and attracts attention. This is a magnificent piece with so much delicate detail and vibrant colors. The bottom of the piece bears the underglaze blue mark of Sitzendorf porcelain. Founded in 1850, Sitzendorf is world renowned for its finely detailed porcelain figurines and sculptures. It was not until 1884 that the town of Sitzendorf in Thuringia (East Germany) began manufacturing figurines, although the factory had begun working with porcelain in 1850. Most of the factory was demolished in 1858 in an explosion, but it later reopened and continued to operate until World War II. Authentic Sitzendorf porcelain bears two indicative marks. One is the blue crown above the letter S with a double slash, the other is two crossed lines. Both are deep blue and appear on all items from the Sitzendorf factory. Sitzendorf porcelain is representative of the Dresden style of porcelain. Dresden-style porcelain is distinguished by the use of flowers, shells, fruits, leaves and scrolls. The porcelain is so white that it is almost translucent. Dimensions: Height 17.5 cm, width 10 cm, depth 15 cm, weight 627 grams.
