Pair of oval reliefs depicting the Virgin Mary and Christ
(2) Marble and wooden frame, cm 14 x 12 x 2.5
The pair of marble relief portraits are from the late 17th century Roman school and are distinguished by the refinement of the treatment of the figures. Note the attention to detail and physiognomy of faces, taken in profile as used in ancient Imperial Rome, although they are small format works. In particular, the veil of the Madonna creates strong chiaroscuro contrasts that give intensity and depth to the relief, which have nothing to envy to the plastic all round
