"Rare Royal Worcester Majolica Jardiniere, Circa 1876"
A magnificent Royal Worcester majolica jardiniere of great artistic finesse, covered in a striking turquoise glaze. The jardiniere has a gold-rimmed upper rim, the lower part modelled and decorated with hand-painted semi-large curled ivy stems surrounded by leaves and branches. The piece is set on a wooden pedestal. The predominant colours are turquoise, green and brown. The Royal Worcester mark on the octagonal base comprises a rosette impressed with four "W"s surrounding a "crescent" and surmounted by a crown. Royal Worcester Porcelain was founded in Worcester, England in 1751. By 1755 the company was producing the finest English blue and white porcelain available. Although Royal Worcester concentrated primarily on porcelain and parian wares, in 1789 Worcester was granted a Royal Warrant. Most Royal Worcester majolica is ornamental or figurative, although some functional objects, such as jugs and tea services, are also known. The condition of the jardinière is excellent for its age. There are two cracks to the base, probably from the manufacturing process, and some minor chips to the base and leaves, as well as loss of gilding to the upper rim. There are no other chips, cracks or obvious signs of damage or restoration. Object dimensions: Diameter 20.5cm, Height 23.5cm, Weight 2995g.
