Very large pewter wine PITCHER locally called "CHANNE", baluster-shaped with pedestal and quarter-round goblet, lid topped with a lion and fitted with a thumb with opposing ram's heads. It is decorated with three series of thick rods.
Marks:
1°- Hallmark of Jehan UTIN received master in 1658: crowned hammer / flowers / IEHAN VTIN.
2°- Mark of the "EXERCICE DE L'ARQUEBUSE": two rifles in saltire in a crowned and palmed shield.
3°- Ownership initials engraved on the lid: PG
4°- Indistinct inventory mark affixed to the tab
Height: 35.5 cm.
VEVEY (Switzerland), Second half of the 17th century

In very good condition, early period and of good quality of material and finish; a small local crack is however reported on the goblet.
This pitcher has probably never been scrubbed and has a beautiful dark satin patina. Its large size gives it a great decorative presence.
The "Arquebuse Exercise" was a shooting society in Geneva. It is one of the oldest shooting societies in the city, attested since 1474. At that time, the "exercises" brought together what we would call today militiamen who trained in the defense of the city.
Bibliography: "Die Zinngiesser der Schweiz und ihre Marken" by Schneider and Kneuss who reproduce these marks
