"Antique Porcelain Figurines From Teplitz Wien, Ernst Wahliss, Early 20th Century"
A pair of Victorian beige porcelain figurines of a young boy and girl surrounded by flowers, created in the early 20th century by the Ernst Wahliss factory. The children, festively dressed, are leaning against a hedge decorated with white lilies, with large, natural-looking roses at their feet. Their clothing is hand-decorated with gilded elements. The figurines are finely hand-painted and have excellent detail, including intricate floral designs and clearly defined facial features. The bases bear the red mark of Teplitz Wien. Teplitz refers to art pottery produced by various companies in the Teplitz-Turn region of Bohemia in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. One such company was the Alexandra factory, founded by Ernst Wahliss. The factory operated under this name for only 24 years, making its products very rare and highly sought after by collectors of Bohemian porcelain. Ernst Wahliss was born in 1836 and became one of the leading Viennese retailers of porcelain and ceramic items. His Viennese shop, established in 1863, was so successful that he was able to open other shops in major European cities, such as London, and supply ceramics of the highest quality to many European royal families. In 1894, Wahliss took over Alfred Stellmacher's factory in Turn-Teplitz (in the present-day Czech Republic) and renamed it Ernst Wahliss Kunst, Porzellan und Fayence Fabrik. The company produced large quantities of various objects and received numerous awards at exhibitions. Towards the end of his career, Wahliss gave up his job as a designer and moved to the rural town of Velden, where he opened a luxury hotel. He died in 1900. Two years later, his sons Hans and Erich purchased 600 molds from the Imperial and Royal Porcelain Manufactory in Vienna and began producing reproductions of Viennese porcelain. In 1905, the company was renamed Alexandra Porcelain Works Ernst Wahliss. The factory was bought by Gerhard Martin Wahliss in 1907. In 1910, the factory focused on the production of earthenware. The factory closed temporarily due to World War I, and in 1921, Alexandra Porcelain Works Ernst Wahliss was integrated into Porcelain Union United Porcelain Factories as a branch of Turn-Teplitz. In 1925 it was integrated into Porzellanfabrik Union AG and production ended in 1929.
