This sword is of 19th century manufacture, but given the extreme rarity of authentic "katzbalgers" and the near impossibility of hoping to see a 16th century 2-handed landsknecht sword appear on the market, it is of definite interest.
BLADE: It is a long double-edged blade with a median groove of about 30 cm. In this groove, on each side, we find the inscription "- P . O . V . G . M . H . I . B . + . » This inscription probably evokes a Latin motto, but it is risky to specify which one…
We could risk with a few mistakes and barbarisms “Pater Omnipotens Viris Genitor, et Maria Hospedet In Beatis” = Almighty Father, creator of men, and Maria welcome the blessed, but this interpretation is obviously without guarantee.
At the base of the blade, on each side is a punch: On one side there is a representation of a stylized castle, and on the other a small motif that I have difficulty interpreting: perhaps a tower and a wave, or a curious letter “S”??
Length of the blade = 103 cm, Width near the guard = 4.5 cm, thickness near the guard = 0.8 cm, Balance point = 10 cm from the guard
GUARD: This is the guard in the shape of an “8” typical of lansquenets weapons. It is twisted and the quillons end with a ball, also twisted.
POMMEL: It has the typical fluted mushroom shape, as on the Katzalbalgers. It is topped with a small protuberance on which the tang is riveted.
GRIP : It is twisted, and covered with metal wire. Ferrules made of iron rings.
The whole of this sword is in its original dark patina. It is possible to give it a much brighter appearance with a little cleaning, but I chose to leave it in its discovery state.
