The artist
James Bansac was born in Lyon in 1924. He trained at the Ecole nationale des beaux-arts in Lyon, where he won the Prix de Paris in 1945, which allowed him to settle in Paris. There he met many artists, such as André Breton, Tristan Tzara and Pablo Picasso. He perfected his art at the Grande Chaumière studio and at the Atelier Lombard. Back in Lyon, he became a figure of "Sanzism", which brought together the young artists of this city, not claiming to belong to any movement. He was intensely active as a painter and watercolourist until the 1950s. Then he put painting aside and led a brilliant career as an architect. He resumed painting in the 2000s. The monotype offered here dates from this period. Bansac returned to success as an artist late in life. His works were featured in several exhibitions in Lyon from 1999.
