Object description :

"Louis Edouard Garrido (1893-1982) "lively Port, Saint Vaast Normandy" Caen Auge Impressionism"
SUPERB and LARGE oil on isorel panel by Louis Edouard Garrido representing fishing boats moored in the port of Saint Vaast la Hougue in Lower Normandy, signed lower right. Size of the painting alone without frame 46x61cm or 48.5x62.5cm including frame. This is therefore a magnificent post-impressionist composition by Louis Edouard Garrido who paints here one of his favorite subjects, a lively scene in the port of Saint-Vaast la Hougue, where we can see old sailing trawlers and many fishermen on the quay of the port of Saint-Vaast, very easy to recognize with its large quay lined with old houses. As usual, Garrido uses his typical impressionist touch, very nervous and controlled, just like his extremely rich palette in colors where reds, yellows, greens, blues rub shoulders as well as a dominance of gray and emerald green for the sea and the sky. How can we not think of the famous impressionist painters who also painted Normandy such as Monet, Boudin, Pissarro or Sysley who will be one of the great influences of the painter. Louis-Édouard Garrido, born July 1, 1893 in La Varenne-Saint-Hilaire and died May 13, 1982 in Caen, is a French painter. Son of the Spanish-born painter Eduardo Leon Garrido (1856-1906), whose works are preserved in the Saint-Maur-des-Fossés museum, Louis-Édouard Garrido is a post-impressionist painter who became attached to Lower Normandy and remained loyal to Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue for a quarter of a century. His oils on canvas or on hardboard depict both rural and marine subjects: peasant scenes from the Caen plain, apple trees in blossom in the Pays d'Auge, Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue, Port-en-Bessin, etc. Eduardo-Léon Garrido arrived in Paris in 1875, then settled in La Varenne-Saint-Hilaire. In 1892 he married Léonie Beck (one of his models), who gave birth to their first child, Louis-Édouard, on July 1, 1893. Director of the Caen School of Fine Arts, his students included painters Jack Mutel and Louis-Henry Lemirre (1929-2000) from Vire. President of the Artistes Bas-normands from 1936 to 1972, a painter but also a draftsman and lithographer, his beautifully crafted work is that of a continuator of the Impressionist lesson, abundant and talented, but without stylistic originality compared to his elders, Monet, Pissarro or Sisley. In 1934, Louis-Édouard Garrido was appointed curator of the Caen Museum of Fine Arts. From 1936 to 1939, he undertook a new hanging of the museum's rooms and improved the lighting of the works. A "Louis-Édouard Garrido space" commemorates his work today in the Venoix district of Caen. A collection of his works and those of his father can be seen at the Charles Léandre museum in Condé-en-Normandie. Garrido is now one of the most famous post-impressionist painters of Lower Normandy alongside Brette, Prévot-Valéri, Planquette, Lefranc and Maurice Paris (I also offer a work for sale by this artist). This oil/hardboard panel is in perfect original condition, delivered in a contemporary aluminum frame. Work guaranteed authentic
