"Mumuye Mask, Nigeria."
Mumuye mask called shoulder (rather worn on the head) also called Sukwava. Formerly it was used during ceremonies of preparation for wars, but now it appears during rites which aim to ward off bad luck and divert evil influences. Our example of approximately 56cms high is carved in a hard wood eroded by use, the elements and time (it is worth noting beautiful old indigenous restorations). A rare and spectacular object.
