The artist
Marie Gustave Henry Grosjean was born in Lorraine in 1864 in a family of modest origins. In 1885, he joined the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, then the Académie Julian in 1889. He exhibited at the Salon from 1894.
In 1902, he married Cécile Chochod, originally from Coligny, a village in Ain. Father of four children, he was not requisitioned for the front during the Great War.
He led his family life and his artistic career between his home in the 16th arrondissement of Paris, his studio in Neuilly-sur-Seine and La Bresse where he organized "escapes during the year" in his villa La Floride located in Coligny and where he settled permanently from the fall of 1939.
In 1938, he became president of the Paysagistes Français, after being distinguished by a gold medal from the Society of French Artists. At the 1939 Salon, he was president of the jury.
On November 19, 1948, Henry Grosjean died at the age of 84. He was buried in Coligny.
His early works were about the landscapes of the Paris region. After his marriage and until his last days, the landscapes of Ain and Jura were his favorite subjects. Accompanied by his donkey Pandore carrying the painting equipment, he crisscrossed this region which corresponded "exactly to his ideal as an artist with its supple and sober lines, its charm without blandness, its slightly austere tenderness".
His places of inspiration were nevertheless varied. From 1930, during trips for tourism, sometimes artistic purposes, he painted Lorraine, Burgundy, the Alps, the Côte d'Azur and Spain.
His works were the subject of numerous public sales.
