These eight figures are models, they have not been gilded or silvered in part, like those of the definitive game, and have never been marketed. The bishop is larger than that of the definitive game, and two models of rooks were not retained, which makes them unique pieces. Each figure is signed "JP" in the decoration, and marked Haviland Limoges France on the reverse. They are in excellent condition, except for the queen whose crown has a small lack.
Jean-Jacques Prolongeau (1917-1994), French painter and ceramist, was a student of René Buthaud at the Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux, from 1935 to 1937. He settled in Perpignan in 1940, completed his training as a ceramist at the Roux workshop, then opened his own workshop. He met Raoul Dufy in 1943 and they worked together until Dufy's death in 1953 (ceramics signed R and P). He founded and directed the Perpignan School of Fine Arts, from 1944 to 1960, when he was appointed director of the Ecole Nationale des Arts Décoratifs in Limoges. In 1974, a retrospective of his work was presented at the Musée Adrien Dubouché in Limoges, which has, among other things, a complete copy of this chess set. The last two photos are of the complete set.
