"Rare Italian Renaissance Walnut Study And Desk - 1900"
Very beautiful set consisting of a Mazarin-style desk and a study. These walnut pieces of furniture are richly carved, gilded and painted in the Italian Renaissance style. The desk has a framed top with a molded gilded surround. In the center, this desk has original wine-red leather with a gilded vignette. On the left side, a sliding shelf allows you to enlarge the work surface. The belt of the desk has three drawers carved in relief with foliage and arabesques. The fronts are recessed and gilded moldings follow the outline of the drawers. On the sides, we also observe higher drawers whose different front is carved in relief with arabesques on a granite background and surrounded by painted moldings. This drawer configuration recalls the spirit of Mazarin desks, also by the legs joined by an X-shaped spacer. Indeed, this desk rests on eight legs sculpted with rosettes and decorated with grotesque faces at the top. On each side, the four legs have moving spacers supporting an openwork frame with painted scrolls of the most beautiful effect. The legs end with gilded lion paws. The carved and painted walnut work cabinet is composed of four doors, an open space and drawers. The central doors are made of embedded wine-colored sheet metal, painted with putti, they are covered with a crackled varnish and surrounded by moldings. The lock and its chiseled key are functional. On each side, this piece of furniture has taller and narrower doors. They are made of panels sculpted in relief and painted with arabesques and scrolls. In the lower part, this cabinet has drawers with a molded front with a recess and a wooden pull knob. This piece of furniture rests on eight feet. The front feet end with gilded lion paws. The uprights are carved with rosettes and decorated with grotesque faces in the upper part. The molded and painted cornice is topped with slender spinning tops and a wooden element painted with a leafy frieze. ******** Period: 1900 Excellent condition after Restoration in our cabinetmaking workshop.
