Bronze with gilded patina from the end of the 19th century on its marble base.
This is one of the greatest masterpieces of the great Houdon. Commissioned by Duke Ernest II of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg, this sculpture was executed by the artist in different versions between 1776 and 1790, one of which was purchased by Empress Catherine II of Russia. Very widely commented on in its time, Diana was very innovative in that she appears boldly in her complete nudity while she is hunting and not bathing.
By its classical perfection of the pure beauty of her body and her face with noble and serious features and by its mannerist grace of elongated forms and aerial and whirling movement, this work was a great publishing success.
Very good quality bronze casting . Original base in sea green marble. Signed Houdon.
