A great French naturalist artist, Jules Adler is best known for his painting La Grève au Creusot, reproduced in many school textbooks. A number of exhibitions have paid tribute to him in recent years, including in 2020, ‘Jules Adler, peintre du peuple’ at the Musée d'art et d'histoire du Judaïsme in Paris.
Our work, dated 1887, belongs to the artist's very early years. That same year, he exhibited several drawings at the Salon des Artistes français. With its Orientalist theme, this work is reminiscent of the tableaux vivants that the artist produced in the 1885s, such as the photograph shown above and held in a private collection (see Jules Adler peindre sous la troisième République (cat. exp.), Silvana Editoriale, 201, p. 202).
