Henmi TAKASHI (1895-1944) Sosaku Hanga "Village by the Ocean" Woodblock Print Japan, signed lower right; Left margin needs restoration. Takashi Henmi: Biography Takashi Henmi was born on January 29, 1895 in Wakayama. He graduated from the Tokyo Municipal Higher School of Crafts and became a member of the sosaku hanga artists' association, Nihon Hanga Kyokai, exhibiting with other artists in the 1920s and 1930s. Like most sosaku hanga artists until around 1950, Henmi could not earn a living solely as a printmaker, working as an accountant during the day. In 1934, four of Takeshi Henmi's woodblock prints were shown in Paris at an exhibition organized by Hasegawa Kiyoshi. Henmi contributed thirteen prints to the sosaku hanga series Shin Tokyo Hyakkei - One Hundred New Views of Tokyo, indicating his importance and respect within the group as an artist. Beyond printmaking, Takashi Henmi was active as a poet, which corresponds to the sosaku hanga artists' keen interest in poetry. The mentor of the sosaku hanga group, Koshiro Onchi, had published a magazine that combined art and poetry. Takashi Henmi died on October 19, 1944.
