Object description :

"Alfred Jean Foretay (1861-1944) "elegie" Terracotta Signed Buste"
Alfred Jean Foretay (Swiss, 1861-1944).
Bust of a girl in polychrome terracotta entitled "Elegie" and signed on the base.

A student of Falguière, Foretay debuted at the Salon in 1891. His works are conceived with a strong element of the contemporary fashion for Art Nouveau, which stimulated a younger generation of sculptors around the fin-de-siècle.

This bust in molded and patinated terracotta with a delicate green polychromy belongs to a more refined production of the artist, intended for a wealthy clientele fascinated by the new style that the young sculptors of the time were experimenting with. Foretay created a series of female busts in polychrome patinated terracotta which also includes our Elegie, a series which includes busts such as Salomé and Pensive.
