The Ogoni inhabit the coasts of Nigeria, near the mouth of the Cross River, south of the Igbo and west of the Ibibio. Their sculptures, although varying from one village to another, are best known for their articulated jaw masks, similar to some Ekpo masks of the Ibibio. These masks were traditionally used during funerals, celebrations related to planting and harvesting, and more recently to welcome distinguished guests. The karikpo celebrations, accompanied by the kere karikpo drum, were also an opportunity to present various zoomorphic masks through acrobatic demonstrations.
