"Blue Tinted Blown Glass Sailor's Rolling Pin, Bristol 19th Century England 19th"
Rolling-pin or symbolic rolling pin in blown and tinted glass. Bristol, England, 19th century. A token of fidelity and an amulet, intended to recall the fiancé or husband sailing the oceans, the rolling-pin was decorated with portraits of ships and surprising little poems in mirliton verse. Pierced at one end, supposed to ward off bad luck, it was filled with coarse salt before being hung on the wall. Our example has an interesting decoration of crossed English and French flags on either side, with the inscriptions "God save the Queen - May they ever be (...) Long live the Emperor" and in the center in large yellow letters "Sailors Return". Dimensions: length 34 cm - diameter 5.5 cm. Good general condition, small losses to the painted decoration. Illustration taken from the catalog of the Musée du Verre de Sorèze.
