Jean-Mathieu Chevallier (1694-1768) was an 18th century Parisian cabinetmaker who enjoyed great success during his lifetime. He is the brother of Charles Chevallier, also a cabinetmaker of recognized talent. He began his career as a furniture dealer in rue de Grenelle, at "La Croix Chevallier". He received his letters of Master's degree on March 5, 1743.
He enjoyed great prosperity and received commissions for several aristocratic residences, such as the Hôtel du Duc de Talmont and the Château de Villegénis, which belonged to Louis-Anne de Bourbon-Condé. Its presence, in 1745, among the creditors of André Charles II Boulle perhaps indicates a collaboration between the two craftsmen.
Jean-Mathieu Chevallier, known as the Elder, stamped Louis XV chests of drawers, corner cupboards, secretaries, chests of drawers and cupboards, whose marquetry work is always of very high quality. He is known for his very decorative and elaborate floral marquetry, but he also produced marquetry with geometric patterns, especially on his chests of drawers which recall the "tomb" shape of the Regency.
