The work is signed lower right.
The work is in excellent condition, clean and without any missing parts. It is offered in a wooden and gilded stucco frame, in good condition.
The artist
Francisco Bushell y Laussat was born in Alicante in 1836. He died in the same city in 1901. He was a student at the School of Fine Arts in Madrid, then in Paris. Very early on, he painted in the orientalist style. In 1863, the city of Alicante awarded him a scholarship that allowed him to go to Rome. In the 1870s and 80s, he exhibited in France and Great Britain. He made many sketches taken from life, but also still lifes of flowers, such as the one we offer here, and portraits. Bushell then returned to Alicante. He married, taught painting and French, and continued to paint.
The Prado Museum in Madrid holds one of his works. The Museum of Fine Arts in Alicante holds many. Several of his still lifes and portraits have been the subject of public sales.
