"Antique Gilded Porcelain Vase By Martial Redon, Limoges, Circa 1882"
Beautiful antique Art Nouveau vase in the form of a double-handled amphora by Martial Redon, Limoges France. The piece has a round body, elegant neck and two handles. Overglaze polychrome painting, heavily gilded details, hand-painted flowers and a blue-feathered bird image that contrasts nicely with the rich gilding. This decorative vase features a floral design on the front of the vase in complementary tones of gold, white and blue. The painting is highlighted with gold, the top of the vase is also decorated in gold and features a "cut-out" design and curled ear handles. On the bottom, the Martial Redon company mark indicates the period of production. This is a graceful and elegant Limoges vase that will take pride of place in your collection. In 1853, three founders - Pierre-Justin Gibus, Alpinien Margaine and Martial Redon - created the company Gibus et Cie and decided to build another hard porcelain factory in Limoges. This is how the Le Pré des Bénédictins factory was born in the city. The organizer of the company was then Pierre-Justin Gibus, who had received a large sum from his father for the development of the company and who was responsible for technical production, Margaine for the manufacture of molds and decoration, and Redon for administration. The bulk of the factory's production consisted of tableware and decorative objects. As the volume was quite large, painting was sometimes entrusted to other companies (for example Haviland). As early as 1855, the company was awarded for the whiteness of its porcelain and the beauty of its design at the Universal Exhibition in Paris. "The whole exhibition of the Gibus house, especially its blue tones, won all the votes of the jury. It is similar to the porcelain exhibition of Sèvres" - this is how in 1858, critics noted the award of a gold medal to porcelain in the exhibition center of France (Paris). The success encouraged the increase of wealthy clientele, so production was oriented towards luxury products, which allowed the manufactory to become one of the four largest, located in Limoges. In 1860, it employed two hundred people. The points of sale included both its own store in Paris and the workshops where the porcelain was painted (for example, distribution was handled by the same company Haviland & Co). In 1872, Margaine left the company, which took the name Gibus et Redon, and production was transferred to Casseaux, in the suburbs of Limoges. The company's workforce grew to 250 people. During this period, the "Gibus et Redon" porcelain continued to participate in exhibitions, where it received the highest distinctions. In 1881, Gibus resigned to devote himself to his work at the Limoges Chamber of Commerce, where he held the position of treasurer. From then on, Martial Redon ran the factory alone, which took the name "Martial Redon" the following year. Until Redon's death in 1890, his son Joseph took over the management of the company, retaining the company name and the old brand. The porcelain exhibition at the International Colonial and Export Exhibition in Amsterdam (1883) was a great success for Martial Redon, who received an honorable mention for vases in the pate sur pate technique. Martial Radon's art objects are highly sought after, both then and now.
