Object description :

"Watch Plate Circa 1580,1630"
Definition:
chiseled bronze, brown patina.
This rare oval dish represents a banquet on Olympus. These dishes are called display or presentation dishes because they were only used for decoration, the depth of the decorations not making them suitable for holding food.
They were arranged vertically on sideboards provided for this purpose, the quantity of display objects (ewers, dishes, vases, etc.) being a social marker of wealth and an indication of the tastes of the master of the house. The chiseling work "bears" a rare and lively organization of the scene. Indeed, there are three successions of decorations.
The background in the background, the motifs have a low relief enhanced by chiseling. The foreground in classic low relief and in the foreground a few characters practically in the round. We will think of an indisputable similarity with the Last Supper, here Zeus seated in front of dishes of food is surrounded by the Gods or demigods of Greek mythology. Among others, we see: Hermes, Pan, Janus, Hercules, Diana, Dionysus, Hera….
The first representations of Biblical scenes often borrow their descriptive organization from Mythology; until the Renaissance, the Last Supper (with Christ and his Apostles) also takes place on a triclinium (as in ancient villas) and not along a long table.
The rim is entirely decorated with scenes from Mythology, for example we see Cerberus guarding the entrance to the kingdom of Hades.
