"Portrait Of Marie Elizabeth Joly, Member Of The Comédie Française "
Interesting engraving, drawn by M... (the revolution is a troubled time) representing Marie Elizabeth Joly, famous French actress of the end of the 18th century. Member of the Comédie Française, adored for her acting, both in Versailles and in Paris, she was worried during the Terror, and saved from death by the intervention of Talma. She gave up the ghost, suffering from tuberculosis, in 1798. Her tomb is a remarkable monument in antique style in the Pontigny region. The engraving, after a portrait in the Comédie Française gallery, is nicely framed in an early 19th century baguette with heart stripes. A little dust under the frame, closed for a long time. A nice notice on the Comédie Française website pays tribute to her.
