Superb and rare agate cameo from the early 19th century representing the profile of Zeus, Jupiter facing right. An impressive cameo due to its dimensions and quality of sculpture.
A superb glyptic work. We often encounter profiles of women or goddesses in these dimensions but the profile of Zeus is much rarer.
This is a two-layer agate cameo. The profile of the god appears sculpted in cream white and stands out from a blue-gray background in a second layer of the stone.
The details are magnificent, the treatment of the hair and beard all in waves, the face superb. Excellent condition. Two veins of the agate appear in a slight darker impression but are of neither crossing nor accidental origin.
The Louis XVI style gold setting is in the neoclassical spirit. A superb glyptic work,
a very beautiful collector's cameo. A rare cameo of Zeus in agate in large dimensions.
