Artist: Eutrope Bouret (1833-1906)
A fine bronze depicting Mercury, the mythological god of commerce, messages, and travelers, seated on a rock, examining his winged ankles. The original model, designed by French sculptor Eutrope Bouret (1833-1906), was exhibited at the 1883 Salon.
Eutrope Bouret (1833-1906) trained with sculptor Louis-Charles-Hippolyte Buhot. He debuted at the 1875 Salon, received an honorable mention in 1885 with a marble statue of Psyche at the tribunal of Venus, and continued to exhibit almost every year until 1903. His bronze bust of Alexis Bouvier adorns the novelist's tomb in the Père-Lachaise cemetery in Paris.
