"Limoges Enamels - Abraham's Servant Seeking A Wife For Isaac - Old Testament"
Mid-19th century France - Limoges Superb Limoges enamel depicting Abraham's servant seeking a wife for Isaac, with a lower cartouche bearing the inscription: "Abraham's servant goes to fetch a wife for his lord Isaac". History of biblical iconography: The scene is taken from Genesis, chapter 24, in the Hebrew Bible or Old Testament. Abraham, feeling the weight of the years, is concerned about the future of his son Isaac and decides that it is time for him to find a wife. Not wanting her to come from the Canaanite peoples among whom they live, Abraham therefore sends his faithful servant Eliezer to Mesopotamia, to the city of Nahor, to find a wife among his relatives. Eliezer, aware of the importance of his mission, undertakes the journey. Arriving near the city of Nahor, he stops at a well and prays to God to guide him. He asks for a sign: the girl who offers water to him and his camels will be the one destined for Isaac. Shortly after, Rebekah, Abraham's great-niece, appears and, without hesitation, offers water to Eliezer and his camels. Recognizing this divine sign, Eliezer offers gifts to Rebekah and meets with her family to ask for her hand in marriage for Isaac. Rebekah's family accepts, and she herself agrees to go with Eliezer to marry Isaac. This story is often interpreted as an example of divine providence and faith. It also illustrates the customs of the time regarding marriage and the search for a spouse. It is an important story in Jewish, Christian, and Islamic traditions, illustrating Abraham's faithfulness to God and the respect of family covenants.
