"Statue Of A Buddhist Monk In Prayer "
Statue representing a kneeling monk in prayer. This is a statue in pink sandstone, lacquered and gilded. Age and weather have worn away the surface, revealing the stone under the lacquer and gilding, the face having retained most of its gilding. A great serenity of features, a slight smile, as befits one whose heart is close to the Buddha. The curves of the body, the flexibility of the position, the detail in the rendering of the feet, relate this statue to the best achievements of ancient Burmese sculpture, possibly before the 19th century.
