Magnificent Naoléon III period basket, rare in this quality and condition.
Made of papier-mâché, it features a rich Japanese or chinoiserie décor in marquetry and mother-of-pearl mosaics.
The overall decoration is highlighted by details painted in gold and/or gold leaf for the poly-lobed reserves, which take the form of gadroons on the reverse.
Each reserve is adorned with a spray of flowers and twigs, alternating with a mother-of-pearl mosaic divider.
The object is centered by a superb, thick mother-of-pearl decoration that fills the entire bottom; this decoration depicts an important figure surrounded by servants, the scene taking place in a beautifully landscaped, architectural garden.
Various trees and flowers can be seen here, as well as a pond in the foreground, in which several small boats occupied by characters sail peacefully. 
A bird flies over the scene, a charming little detail that adds to the serenity of this idyllic setting.
