"Porcelain Headrest/pillow, Japan, Late Meiji Period"
White and blue porcelain headrest from the late Meiji period (1868-1912). It has eight cords through which flat, movable porcelain pieces have been passed. In the reclining position, this surface can accommodate the back of the head. The two main sides are decorated with landscapes in cobalt blue. One side is inscribed. A rare piece.
These headrests were used by women of the wealthy classes who, lying down, wanted to preserve their complex hairstyle. The refinement of these objects showed the social status of their owners.
