Beautiful Venetian canvas from the mid-16th century depicting Saint Jerome meditating in the desert.
This extraordinary character, extremely fascinating and one of the 4 Fathers of the Church, has aroused the interest of all the great masters of ancient painting who have described him in different versions but always charged with the utmost sacredness, a hieratic figure par excellence.
The Saint is portrayed, as per tradition, naked and slightly in profile, with his gaze turned towards the Crucifix, his left hand on his chest and his right on the open book of the Holy Scriptures. In the background of the landscape we can see the silhouette of a lion, an inevitable iconographic attribute of him. Behind him hangs the red cardinal's hat.
The painting is in good condition and comes complete with a beautiful antique lacquered box frame with gilt border.
