Ilmari Tapiovaara TABLE 120 CM VERY GOOD CONDITION "FOR SALE" In 1937 Ilmari Tapiovaara graduated in interior design and the following year he worked for Asko. He is said to have been strongly influenced by Alvar Aalto. During World War II Tapiovaara designed dugouts and field furniture for the Finnish army, a difficult task as only local wood and simple tools could be used, and no nails or screws were available. His Domus chair attracts attention. This chair was designed by Ilmari Tapiovaara for the Helsinki student residence Domus Academica where he worked with his wife from 1946 to 1947. The couple set up their own office in 1951. The following year he taught design at the Illinois Institute of Technology. He then worked in Paraguay and Mauritius on behalf of a United Nations development programme. In 1959 he was awarded the Order of the Finnish Lion, the Pro-Finlandia Medal and in 1964 a gold medal at the XIII em boennale in Milan for his Polar cutlery. He executed much of his work for universities, schools and also made a "Root Table" for the Finnish Army. Furniture based on his sketches is still produced in the 21st century. MORE INFO ASK ME
