Remco van der Gugten (Heemstede 1942) lived and worked in Heemstede and now lives in Haarlem. He was a student at Academy 63 and the Academy of Visual Arts in The Hague. In addition to being a painter, he was a sculptor. There are several characteristic statues in the public space of Haarlem and he plays a small but important role as a public artist in the city. Remco is well known in Haarlem as a jazz musician; he plays the saxophone and is a clarinetist. Some of his works are part of the National Collection. Van der Gugten was a member of 'Art is our goal' in Haarlem.
