"Seaside Landscape Signed Marie Raymond"
Marie Raymond, born in Colle-sur-Loup in 1908 and died in Paris in 1989) came from the provincial bourgeoisie of the Côte d'Azur. She discovered her vocation for painting in 1924 while visiting the studio of Alexandre Stopelaëre in Cannes. It was at his home that she met the young Dutch painter Fred Klein. Their son would become the famous Yves Klein. Despite their very different styles of painting, mother and son would influence each other. The present painting illustrates Marie's path towards abstraction. According to G. Schurr, "The guidargus of painting from the 19th century to the present day" she abandoned landscape and figuration from 1938 "to approach this abstraction in subtly matched pastel tones" Our undated oil on canvas is to be placed between figuration and abstraction and will have been painted at the end of the 1930s. The painting is in excellent condition and has its original Montparnasse frame.
