Otodus (megaselachus) megalodon,
Beautiful natural black patina.
Size: 11 cm (largest dimension of the tooth).
Geological period : Miocene (-23 to -5 million years)
Origin : Carolina coast (USA)
Superficial erosion of the black root of the teeth is common due to the friction of the sands swept by the sea currents, as well as lithophagous organisms.
Custom-made base, wooden base (blackened pine).
Dense and very stable fossil.
A bit of paleontology :
A close relative of the Great White shark, the "megalodon" is an extinct species that can reach 10 to 16 meters long. It is considered one of the largest lamniforms (order of sharks) that our oceans have known. It lived between -23 and -3.6 million years (Miocene - Pliocene). The extinction of this large predator probably coincides with the global cooling of the oceans at the end of the Neogene, causing sea levels to fall, destroying many coastal habitats and therefore its potential prey.
Otodus megalodon is an extinct species, and its remains are fossils. The species having disappeared, it is not subject to any protection status, the sale of fossils is then authorized.
