Beautiful shaped piece featuring a Nymphea depicting a Naiad with water lilies in bloom. Good condition (one petal missing from a flower) Dimensions: 34 cm long X 32 cm wide X 11 cm in relief. Ernst Wahliss, born in 1836, was a renowned Austrian artist of the 19th century. A notable collaborator of Karl Klaus, Wahliss left a lasting mark on the history of Viennese art from the late 1880s. As a successful merchant, he established himself as the leading Viennese retailer of porcelain and ceramics. Since 1863 he has operated a ceramics shop in Vienna, whose international success allowed him to open shops in major European cities such as London, supplying high-quality ceramics to many European royal families. In 1894 Ernst Wahliss acquired the Alfred Stellmacher factory in Turn-Teplitz, Bohemia (now in the Czech Republic), and began producing decorative ceramics under the name "Ernst Wahliss Kunst, Porzellan und Fayence Fabrik". After Ernst's death in 1900, his son Gerhard Martin Wahliss took over the factory in 1907 and continued to create a variety of functional and decorative objects in earthenware and porcelain. The Serapis-Wahliss line, launched in 1911, was made of white earthenware and decorated with geometrically stylized natural forms such as flowers and peacock feathers. Hand-painted with richly colored glazes, these decorations represented the avant-garde of Austrian ceramics at the time. Designers such as Karl Klaus, who had studied under Josef Hoffmann, brought a rare delicacy and urban sophistication to Wahliss’s aesthetic project. After decades of artistic influence, Wahliss’s legacy lives on through his son’s designs and the continued recognition of his impact on the Viennese art scene.
