Son of a Dutch architect and a Belgian mother. He started as a costume designer and then interior decorator in Paris. Initially drawing posters, he later painted symbolic compositions inspired by Baudelaire on the theme of women. With Eugène Gaillard and Edouard Colonna, he was chosen by Siegfried Bing, founder of the boutique "L'Art Nouveau", to design rooms in his pavilion at the Universal Exhibition, Paris in 1900.
