Japanese bronze incense burner from the 19th century, 47 cm high and 24 cm wide at its widest point. This incense burner rests on a tripod base, its belly is decorated with dragons, snakes and phoenixes. Its handles are in the shape of birds and its lid is openwork to let the incense scents rise. It is topped with a Qilin (Chinese Unicorn). A Qilin is a Mythical creature unknown to Westerners, yet it is one of the four Celestial creatures of ancient China. It was adopted by traditional Japanese culture. It is a true omen of good omen, the Qilin announces virtue, peace and prosperity. It has a very beautiful chocolate patina.
