"Berthe Hainaut (c.1883-1976) Woman From The Island Of Oléron At Her Spinning Wheel"
Berthe HAINAUT (Bohain (Aisne) c.1883 - 1976) Oléronaise at her spinning wheel Pastel H. 90 cm; W. 73 cm Signed lower right Provenance: Private collection, Bordeaux Despite her recognized talent, Berthe Hainaut did not leave much of a mark on posterity outside of her works. Her corpus is mainly composed of pastels executed with great care, portraits and landscapes made throughout France. Our large pastel was cleaned by a specialist in this medium and reframed in its original frame after being fixed and placed under a closed box, so that no external dust could touch the work. The headdress worn here by our woman from the island of Oléron at her spinning wheel seems to be a “caline”. This woman is wearing a red shawl whose ends are enhanced with floral motifs.
