Canepa painted on a light white cotton canvas. Here again, the contrast effect is important between this support and the pictorial paste, rather thick.
The work is signed lower right.
The work is clean, without retouching, in very good condition. It is presented in a pretty light frame in carved wood, which highlights the colors of the canvas. It is also in very good condition.
The artist
Jean-Frédéric CANEPA was born in Marseille, a city where he also spent his entire career. Trained at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in this city, he also taught there. Canepa was successful in his region, and decorated many monuments in Marseille and the surrounding area: the Marseille courthouse, the Aubagne town hall, the Provence pavilion at the 1937 World's Fair, but also schools, ocean liners, a casino, etc. He also designed the posters for Marcel Pagnol's first films.
Canepa painted many Provençal landscapes, including the Camargue. He was also a portrait painter, without disdaining still life. His compositions are rigorous, with the line and light constructing the volumes.
The museums of Marseille and the Regards de Provence Foundation hold some of his works. They have also been the subject of numerous public sales in France.
