English, late 18th century.
Measures 2.8 x 2.3 x 2cm.
The matrix is engraved with a quartered coat of arms with ‘Lewes/Lewis’ quartering ‘Atkinson’ and impaling ‘Wood’. The ‘Wood’ family crest is the same borne by the Lord Halifax, Edward Wood, 1st Earl of Halifax however as he dates to the mid 20th century it is impossible that it is his seal. As the names are not very unusual, it is difficult to find the identity of the couple whose seal it was. The fine gold mount is fluted to the reverse, the bail with decorative pierced scroll work.
